Martin & Orloff
Capsule by J.R. Jones
A corporate nebbish (Ian Roberts), released from the hospital after a suicide
attempt, is dragged into a series of bizarre adventures by his cigar-chomping
psychiatrist (Matt Walsh) in this superior 2002 farce by Walsh, Roberts, and
Katie Roberts, all veterans of Chicago's ImprovOlympic who went on to form
the Upright Citizens Brigade. Like a long-form improvisation, the script began
with a single image (a man forced to clean up after his own bloodbath) and
creates its own logic as it goes along, but the players are so quick on their
feet that they easily negotiate the outrageous turns of plot. Lawrence Blume
directed; with Andy Richter, David Cross, Rachel Dratch, and Tina Fey. 86 min.
